Experimental Verification of the Hall Effect during Pull Reconnection in MRX

چکیده
The most important goal in magnetic reconnection research is to explain the fast magnetic reconnection phenomena observed in nature. The Hall effect has been found to drive fast magnetic reconnection in 2D numerical simulations [1]. An out-of-plane quadrupole magnetic field found in these numerical simulations [2,3] is the hallmark of the Hall effect. This quadrupole magnetic field has been observed during magnetic reconnection in the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX) [4]. The spatial scale of this quadrupole magnetic field and the deduced electron current pattern show good agreement with simulation results. Measurements also show that the Hall effect is more significant in the collisionless regime and becomes small as the collisionality increases, indicating that the Hall effect plays an important role in collisionless reconnection. This work is supported by DOE, NSF and NASA.

Experimental study of two-fluid effects on magnetic reconnection in a laboratory plasma with variable collisionality
This article describes the recent findings on two-fluid effects on magnetic reconnection in plasmas with variable collisionality in the magnetic reconnection experiment MRX M. Yamada et al., Phys. The MRX device has been upgraded to accommodate a variety of reconnection operation modes and high energy density experiments by increasing its capacitor bank energy and extendi...

In this Letter we report a clear and unambiguous observation of the out-of-plane quadrupole magnetic field suggested by numerical simulations in the reconnecting current sheet in the magnetic reconnection experiment. Measurements show that the Hall effect is large in the collision-less regime and becomes small as the collisionality increases, indicating that the Hall effect plays an important r...

To address the interplay between local and global effects in magnetic reconnection, axisymmetric numerical simulations for the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment [M. Yamada et al., Phys. Plasmas 4, 1936 (1997)] are performed using the NIMROD code [C.R. Sovinec et al., J. Comp. Phys. 195, 355 (2004)]. The ‘pull’ and ‘push’ modes of the device are simulated both with and without two-fluid effects i...

The role of turbulence in the process of magnetic reconnection has been the subject of a great deal of study and debate in the theoretical literature. At issue in this debate is whether turbulence is essential for fast magnetic reconnection to occur in collisionless current sheets. Some theories claim it is necessary in order to provide anomalous resistivity, while others present a laminar fast...
متن کاملMeasurement of lower-hybrid drift turbulence in a reconnecting current sheet.
We present a detailed study of fluctuations in a laboratory current sheet undergoing magnetic reconnection. The measurements reveal the presence of lower-hybrid-frequency-range fluctuations on the edge of current sheets produced in the magnetic reconnection experiment (MRX). The measured fluctuation characteristics are consistent with theoretical predictions for the lower-hybrid drift instabili...
